How to Bleed Electric Scooter Brakes on VSETT Scooters, Nutt & Zoom Brake CalipersUpdated 2 hours ago
Watch and follow along with our how to bleed electric scooter brakes video.
Learn how to bleed the hydraulic brake system on VSETT 9+, VSETT 10+ and VSETT 11+ or electric scooters with Zoom or Nutt brake calipers.
Bleeding your VSETT electric-scooter brakes is the fastest way to restore bite, eliminate spongy travel, and extend pad life. Follow this step-by-step tutorial to flush air bubbles and old fluid from Zoom or Nutt hydraulic brake systems on the VSETT 10+, 11+, 9+, and other models in under 20 minutes.
Why Bleed VSETT Brakes?
- Sharper stopping power — rid the line of micro-bubbles.
- Consistent lever feel — no more “spongy” pull halfway through a ride.
- Longer component life — fresh fluid protects seals and pistons.
- Safety — the #1 maintenance task for high-speed e-scooters.
Tools & Supplies
Item | For | Notes |
Szarv / SFO brake-bleed kit | Syringes, tubes, tips | Find on Amazon |
Shimano red mineral oil | Zoom calipers | Match color to video |
Finish Line green mineral oil | Nutt calipers | Any high-grade mineral fluid |
5 mm hex (Fix-It-Stik) | Caliper removal | Side bolts on VSETT mount |
Torx T10 + T15 | Bleeder screws | VSETT uses star heads |
Brake-pad spacer | Prevent piston squeeze | Included in bleed kit |
Catch cup | Hold screws & O-rings | Keeps workbench tidy |
Latex gloves & rags | Clean-up | Mineral oil stains paint |
Step-by-Step Brake-Bleed Procedure
1. Remove Caliper
- Power off the scooter and fold the stem for stability.
- Using a 5 mm hex, remove the two side-mount bolts and lift the caliper off the rotor.
- Rotate the caliper clockwise until the rear bleed screw faces up.
2. Insert Pad Spacer
Slide the plastic bleed block between the pads to keep pistons from creeping while you pump fluid.
* Be sure to check your pads for ware. Replace them if they are low or damaged. It's good to have a spare set of brake pads for your electric scooter on hand at all times.
3. Prep Top Syringe (Lever)
- At the brake lever, remove the tiny bleeder screw (T10).
- Fill a syringe with 15 ml of mineral oil (red for Zoom, green for Nutt).
- Thread the syringe into the lever port by hand; snug gently with a small wrench—don’t over-tighten. Keep the tube clamped.
4. Prep Bottom Syringe (Caliper)
- Remove the caliper bleed screw (T15).
- Transfer its O-ring onto a second syringe tip.
- Thread that syringe into the caliper port, tube still clamped.
5. Open Both Clamps
Once both syringes are secure, release the hose clamps to let fluid flow.
6. Push Fluid Top → Bottom
- Gently press the top syringe until you see bubbles exit the bottom tube.
- Stop as soon as clear fluid (no bubbles) appears.
7. Push Fluid Bottom → Top
- Now press the bottom syringe upward.
- Watch the lever syringe for bubbles; stop when the stream is clear.
This back-and-forth cycle ensures every trapped pocket of air escapes.
8. Lock the System
- Re-clamp both hoses.
- Unscrew the bottom syringe first; some fluid loss is normal.
- Re-install the caliper bleed screw with its original O-ring and snug firm.
- Remove the top syringe and reinstall its bleed screw. Wipe away excess oil.
9. Re-mount Caliper
- Remove the pad spacer.
- Slide the caliper over the rotor and reinstall the two 5 mm side bolts.
- Spin the wheel and squeeze the lever a few times; pads should center automatically.
- If rubbing persists, loosen the bolts, squeeze the lever, then retighten.
10. Final Checks
Check | Pass Criteria |
Lever feel | Firm within 1–2 cm pull |
Rotor rub | Wheel spins > 1 rev freely |
Fluid leaks | None around ports |
Test-ride | Low-speed stop test before riding full speed |
Maintenance Interval
Bleed every 6–12 months or whenever the lever feels spongy—more often if you ride in rain or downhill brake heavily.
Frequently Searched Questions
Q: How do I bleed VSETT 10+ brakes?
A: Follow the syringe-to-syringe method outlined above; the VSETT 10+ uses Zoom or Nutt calipers that accept mineral oil only.
Q: Can I use DOT brake fluid?
A: No. VSETT hydraulic systems are mineral-oil based. DOT fluids swell seals and void warranties.
Q: Which oil color for which caliper?
A: Red (Shimano) for Zoom or Green (Finish Line/Magura) for Nutt.
Q: Do I need to remove the wheel?
A. No. Rotating the caliper gives full access to the bleed port.
